In the Lake Basin region, the traditional water sources for domestic use have been un protected springs, rivers, streams, water pans and lakes. Less than 30% of the rural population has access to safe and clean water within a reasonable distance. In order to improve the health and welfare of the rural population, the Authority has since the 1982 implemented water and sanitation programmes with the aim of providing safe and clean water, which is easily accessible, in adequate quantities and at affordable cost. This programme involves construction of bore holes, hand dug wells, dams, water pans, wells, springs’ protection and sanitation facilities.
The organization has also conducted detailed research, feasibility studies and created opportunities for additional projects such as the community based projects. Over the years, these studies have guided the Authority in the development, packaging and implementation of technology transfer programmes and projects throughout the Region. The programme and projects are implemented through Technology Transfer Centres which are strategically located in the LDDA’s area of operation. The Centres include; Lichota, Alupe, Muhoroni, Sangalo, Lunyu, Kibos, Muhoroni, Kapsabet, Kodera, Borabu, Rongo, Rae and Kimulot.
The strategic nature of location and spatial spread of the centres allows for quality and ease of access and maximum benefit by the local communities. The technology innovations and best practices are packaged and demonstrated in these centres for up take by the local communities within the QMS parameters. These include; aquaculture, low cost building materials, value addition of agricultural produce, natural resource conservation and agribusiness. Objectives of the technology transfer Centres are to:

• Demonstrate best practices
• Avail quality seeds i.e. in calf heifers, fish fingerlings, and rain fed rice, soya beans and horticultural tree.
